Born in Russia in 1873 of English and American parents, Lambert came to Australia in 1887, studying at the Julian Ashton School in Sydney before receiving a travelling scholarship which enabled him to study in Europe and England. Lambert exhibited at the Royal Academy, the New Salon and the International Society. He was awarded the silver medal at the International Society in 1912, and made a member of the Royal Academy in 1922, being the only Australian to attain the honour to that time. Much of his best work was done as a war artist during World War I. On his return to Australia his popularity grew to such an extent that he was probably the best known artist of his time. His work is widely represented in all state and major provincial collections.

George Lambert is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1967 of 567, of which 402 (71%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $374,318 for Artist and His Batman, Light Horse Calvary, Jerusalem Heights sold by Deutscher and Hackett in December 2021. This year 3 works have been offered for sale. Works by George Lambert are held by the Australian War Memorial, Art Gallery of NSW and a further nine major public national galleries (see list below).
