Born in Dumfries, Scotland in 1762, Watling was convicted of forging bank notes and transported Sydney, arriving in 1792. He painted many of the early colonial pictures of Australia and made a large number of sketches of birds, fish, mammals, plants, landscapes and Aboriginal people. He is believed to have painted what is claimed to be the first oil painting of Sydney, A direct north general view of Sydney Cove 1794. Principally a landscape artist, his works are represented in the Mitchell Library in Sydney.
