Born in Tournan-en-Brie, Seine-et-Marne, in 1836, he entered the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in 1852. Le Febvre was among the most honoured of French academic masters of the late 19th century. He won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1861. Between 1855 and 1898, he exhibited 72 portraits in the Paris Salon. Especially known for portraits, of which his most famous is Chloe, the famous nude portait which has graced the walls of the Young & Jackson Hotel since 1909. He was also a teacher at the Academie Julian, with a number of Australians among his pupils
