Born in Scotland in 1818, John Buchanan arrived in New Zealand in 1849 and worked in Otago as a botanist and draughtsman. In 1865 he exhibited wash drawings and watercolours of Otago's geological features and drawings of alpine plants. He also exhibited at the International Exhibition in Melbourne in 1880. Buchanan died in 1898. His work is represented in the Turnbull and Hocken libraries.
