Born in New Zealand in 1953, Thornton Walker arrived in Australia in 1965, settling in Melbourne. He graduated with a Diploma of Art (Printmaking) from the Prahran College of Advanced Education in 1976, and began a Post Graduate Diploma (Printmaking) at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne in 1977. He also studied in Europe and the USA. In 1994 he was awarded an Australia Council Studio Residency in Barcelona, Spain. He has exhibited his paintings in Melbourne since 1980 and has continued to exhibit nationally. Overseas, Walker’s work is represented in collections in the British Museum and Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, Nagoya, Japan.

We have records of art auction sales by Thornton Walker from 1986 and in total 63 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 37 (59%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $16,800 for Chinese Bowl (Blue Air 2nd Study) 2000 sold by Deutscher~Menzies in December 2005. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Thornton Walker are held by the Art Gallery of Western Australia, National Gallery of Australia and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
