Born in 1886, George Benson studied at the National Gallery Art School, Melbourne. He was an illustrator prior to World War I, during which he served as a war artist. Early in the war he made panoramic sketches of the Gallipoli Peninsula before the allies' landing. He later served in France and was wounded and mentioned in despatches. After the war he moved to Perth and established a fine reputation as a watercolourist. He also decorated the beams of Winthrop Hall at the University of Western Australia.
