South Australian writer, artist and printmaker Barbara Hanrahan was born in 1939. She studied at the South Australian School of Art for 3 years and then went to London in 1963 to study printmaking at the Central School of Art.in London, where she lived until 1978. A member of the Contemporary Art Society in Adelaide, she was awarded the Cornell Prize in 1961. Over her career, she created over 400 prints, as well as a great many paintings. She had over thirty solo exhibitions and took part in numerous group exhibitions. She lectured in art in England at Falmouth School of Art and Portsmouth College of Art, and in Adelaide at Western Teachers College, South Australian School of Art, Salisbury College of Advanced Education and Torrens College of Art.Barbara Hanrahan published 14 novels and short story collections. She died of cancer aged 52 in 1991.
