Born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1887, Owen Merton was encouraged in watercolour painting by James Walsh of the Canterbury School of Art. He made the first of many trips to Europe in 1904. He exhibited in Europe and USA and intermittently in New Zealand. Merton died in London in 1931, aged 44.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $10,126 for European Street Scene sold by International Art Centre in February 2021. This year one work has been offered for sale.
