Born in London in 1876, Benjamin Sheppard studied at the Royal Academy prior to his arrival in Tasmania in 1896. A sculptor and teacher, he taught at the Hobart Technical College. Sheppard made the South African Memorial in Hobart's Domain, as well as two large murals for St Joseph's Church. In 1906 he returned to London and later moved to Cape Town in South Africa where he died of tuberculosis in 1910.

Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1994.
