Born in Ireland in 1828, Benjamin Branfill arrived in Nelson, New Zealand in the 1880s as a Lieut. Colonel in the British Army. A topographical artist and portraitist, he was a teacher at the Bishopdale Skethcing Club, (now the Nelson Suter Art Society) and a founding member of the Suter Art Gallery in Nelson. He exhibited with the Fine Arts Association in Wellington in 1883 and 1884 And the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington form 1890 to 1897.
