Born in carlton in 1892, Esther Paterson studied at the Melbourne National Gallery School from 1907 to 1912, commencing her studies aged 13 and graduating as the head of the painting class. She was a council-member of the Victorian Artists Society from 1954 to 1968, elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London in 1949, and president of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors in 1966. Best known for her street-scenes and landscapes, Paterson also worked as a commercial artist in book-illustration and cartoons. She died in 1971 in Middle Park, and a retrospective exhibition was held at Manly Art Gallery & Museum in 2003.
