About Joel Rea
Born in 1983, and raised on the Gold Coast Joel Rea graduated from the Queensland College of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Art in 2003 and was awarded Golden Key International Honour Society membership along with the Griffith Award for Academic Excellence in Fine Art at the Queensland College. Working in oil on canvas works, he is known for his surreal, allegorical paintings. He has been a finalist in a number of art awards including the Redland Gallery Art Award, Biennial Contemporary Painting Competition in 2010, the Sulman Prize, Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2014, the Mosman Art Prize, Mosman Art Gallery in 2016 and was awarded the Vice Chancellor Portrait Commission for The University of Sydney permanent collection in 2020. He has shown in solo and group exhibitions since 2004 in Australia and overseas in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, London, Singapore and Berlin.
