Christian Thompson is an Australian artist born in Gawler, South Australia, in 1978. He has Bidjara and Chinese Australian heritage from his father's side, and Irish, Norwegian, and Sephardic Jewish ancestry. Thompson grew up moving around Australia and spent his formative years in Barcaldine, learning about his father's culture and traditions from his grandmother and great aunts. Thompson studied fine arts at the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba, followed by a degree in fine arts at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He completed his doctorate at the Ruskin School of Art at the University of Oxford as one of the first two Indigenous Australians to attend Oxford. Thompson has worked as a curator, established the MHUL Workshop, and has exhibited his work nationally and internationally. Thompson's art deals with identity and the relationship between form and performance, and he has worked with photography, video, textiles, sculpture, and performance. Some of his notable works include Emotional Striptease, The Gates of Tambo, and Australian Graffiti. His work has appeared in various publications and is held in collections worldwide, including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, and the Aboriginal Art Museum in the Netherlands. Thompson's Lost Together series was developed during his residency at DasArts in the Netherlands and combines classical music, traditional rhythms, and lyrical narratives.
