Born in England James Wallis arrived in Australia in 1814, becoming the military commander in Newcastle from 1816 to 1818. Also an artist, his work became an important historical account of the Aboriginal people in the Newcastle area, as well as landscapes, flora and fauna of the area. In 1819, Wallis published a set of engraved views showcasing New South Wales to the world titled An Historical Account of NSW and its Dependent Settlements which was published in 1821 and is now known as the 'Wallis Album'. The album was purchased at auction by the NSW State Library for $1.8 million in 2011. Wallis died in 1858.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $56,945 for Newcastle, New South Wales, Looking Towards Prospect Hill sold by Christies in October 1991. Works by James Wallis are held by the National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Australia and Queensland Art Gallery.
