Born in 1901, John Oakley was known as a New Zealand painter and teacher in Napier and at the University of Caterbury School of Fine Arts. He exhibited with the Auckland Society of Arts, the Canterbury Society of Arts, the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts from 1937 and The Group in 1950, 1952 and 1958. He was the author of Paintings of Canterbury 1840 - 1890, published in 1969.
