Born in London of Swiss parents in 1912, John Lunghi studied at the Central School of Art in London before his arrival in Australia in 1937. He settled in Western Australia and was employed as a graphic artist and then director of the art department until 1975 after which he taught art at Perth Technical College from 1975 to 1979. He became president of the Perth Society of Artists and was awarded the Festival of Art painting prize in 1958. Lunghi used a variety of styles ranging from impressionism through to abstraction.
