Born in Sydney in 1911, Roy Hodgkinson studied with his brother Frank under Dattilo Rubbo at the Royal Art Society, and later in Europe. He was employed as an illustrator with the Sydney newspapers, 'Daily Guardian' and 'Sun' from 1929 to 1931 and with the Melbourne 'Herald' between 1932 and 1976. Hodgkinson exhibited drawings of ballet dancers in 1939, and, during World War II served as an official war artist in New Guinea. His work is represented in the National Gallery of Victoria and the Australian War Memorial.
