Marjory Penglase was born at Echuca, Victoria in 1922. She studied at the Melbourne Technical Art School (RMIT) from 1940-45 and then taught there in 1945-46. While studying with Murray Griffin she met artist Newton Hedstrom who she married, and held her first exhibition at Melbourne's Myer Gallery in 1946. She was an inaugural member of the Studio of Realist Art and exhibited with the Society of Artists and in various competitive exhibitions. In the 1970s and 80s she undertook study tours to Britain, Europe and China. As well as a painter, she was also a theatre designer for a number of amateur theatre groups in Sydney and Melbourne.
