Born in Auckland in 1874, Walter Bowring studied at Auckland Grammar School. After visiting London in 1905 to study under Sir William Orpen and Augustus John, he returned to live in Christchurch where he painted portraits. He also worked as a cartoonist with the 'New Zealand Observer', the 'Spectator' and 'Weekly Press'. He exhibited widely throughout New Zealand.
