Watkins was born in 1835 and died in 1904. He lived in Akaroa on the South Island, for most of his life, painting local landscapes. He is believed to have travelled briefly to Melbourne during the late 1870s to study at the Melbourne School of Art. He mostly exhibited at the Canterbury Society of Arts.
The earliest auction listing we have for William Watkins is in 1970 and in total 20 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 13 (65%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $28,310 for Mt Aspiring and Waimakariri Valley sold by International Art Centre in March 2008. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by William Watkins are held by the Christchurch Art Gallery and National Gallery of Victoria.
