Born in Halifax, England in 1892, and studied at the Royal College of Art in South Kensington, London. His studied were interrupted during the First World War as he served in the army for four years. Frederick Ellis moved to New Zealand in 1921. A painter, etcher and stained-glass designer he taught at Dunedin School of Art, and later Wellington Technical College.
