Born in Paris in 1829, artist and lithographer Francois Cogne arrived in Australia in 1851 and was active in the Victorian goldfields in the late 1850s. He made a series of lithographs of Ballarat in 1859 and after moving to Melbourne he a number of plates for The Melbourne Album produced by Charles Troedel in 1863-64. He also worked as an engraver for the magazine 'Ballarat Punch'. He left Australia in 1864 and returned to Paris.
