About Mark Russell Gawen
Born in South Australia in 1861, Gawen was a mainly self-taught artist, although he did study for a short time in Paris when he was in his 30s. Best known as a sporting artist, he received commissions to paint many of the top race horses of his period. He lived most of his life in Victoria.
