Born in Romania in 1931, Hessing studied in Paris and travelled widely throughout Europe and the Middle East prior to his arrival in Australia in 1951. In Australia he studied architecture at the University of Sydney, becoming a lecturer in art there in 1959. He is known for his abstract expressionist paintings which have won him several awards.
