Born in Pahiatua, New Zealand in 1952, Julia Morrison studied at the Wellington Polytechnic and the Canterbury School of Fine Art. She was the Frances Hodgkins Fellow at the University of Otago in 1988. She works across painting, sculpture, photography, installation and ceramics. In 1989 she won the Moet & Chandon Fellowship and studied in France where she remained for 10 years. On her return she became Senior Lecturer in Painting at the University of Canterbury. A major survey exhibition on Julia Morison's work was held at the Christchurch Art Gallery and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery in 2006. In 2018 she was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
