Born in Auckland in 1872, Mabel Hill studied at the Wellington School of Design under J. M. Nairn. After her marriage she moved to Dunedin where she taught art privately and exhibited her work at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and Otago Art Society. She became known as a landscape, portrait and still life painter and an etcher. Her work is also found under her married name, Mabel McIndoe. In 1926 she travelled overseas, returning to New Zealand for two periods only: 1934-1938 and during World War II. She died in England in 1956. Mabel Hill's work is represented in New Zealand's National Art Gallery and in the Hocken Library.
