Born in London in 1791 William Thomas arrived in Melbourne via Sydney in 1839. He became Protector of the Aborigines in Melbourne, Westernport and Gippsland and he moved around these areas living with the Aboriginal people. He drew pencil sketches of the Aborigines in the areas he visited.
