Born in Ireland in 1869, McClintock came to Australia in 1879 as a child, settling in Adelaide. After schooling he travelled to Melbourne and worked in a variety of occupations before being employed by farm machinery importer, working for them for the rest of his life, while painting out of work hours. He mainly worked in watercolours, working and exhibiting with the artists of the Heidelberg School. McClintock was a council member of the Victorian Artists' Society and exhibited with them from 1895 to 1912 when he joined the Australian Art Association, of which he was a foundation member. He died in 1922 and in that year a memorial exhibition of his work was held at the Athaneum Gallery.
