Born in Germany in 1866, Wilhelm Dittmer was living in New Zealand before the turn of the twentieth century. He exhibited in Auckland and Wellington, and on two occasions had his work reproduced in the 'New Zealand Graphic', a portrait in 1899 and drawings of the Wanganui River in 1903. In 1907 he compiled and illustrated a collection of Maori legends entitled 'Te Tohunga'.

We have records of art auction sales by Wilhelm Dittmer from 1990 and in total 16 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 8 (50%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $52,566 for The Keeper of Mere Pahikaure, Te Rerehau Kahotea sold by Webb's in November 1995. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Wilhelm Dittmer are held by the Christchurch Art Gallery.
