Born in 1903 in Dunedin, Stewart MacLennan studied at the Dunedin School of Art and at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1939 he became art master at Wairarapa College, and in 1946 education officer at the National Art Gallery, and was appointed the first Director of the National Art Gallery in the 1950s and 60s. He was a member of the Council of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, 1943–49, and vice-president, 1949–59. He A painter, teacher and printmaker he exhibited with the Auckland Society of Arts, the Hays Art Competitions in 1962 and 1963, the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts from 1934, and The Group in Christchurch in 1943 and 1948.
The total number of works by Stewart MacLennan offered for sale by auction since 1994 is 226, of which 171 (76%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,291 for Shaken and Deserted sold by Webb's in June 1998. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2022. Works by Stewart MacLennan are held by the Museum Of New Zealand, Christchurch Art Gallery and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
