Born in London in 1893, Hawkins studied at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, at the Westminster School and the Royal College of Art. After a wound received in World War I rendered his right arm useless, he spent some time learning to paint with his left arm. Adopting the name 'Raokin' he lived in Southern Europe for some years where he painted and produced lino cuts. In 1935 he arrived in Australia via Tahiti and New Zealand becoming a major force in the contemporary art of the 1930s to 1950. He was president of the Contemporary Art Society.
