Born in England in 1882, Richard Wallwork studied etching and painting in London. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon. He and his wife, artist Elizabeth Wallwork, arrived in New Zealand in 1911. Richard Wallwork was appointed Life Instructor at the Canterbury School of Art, and from 1927 to 1946, was Director. He exhibited with the Canterbury Society of Arts.
The earliest auction listing we have for Richard Wallwork is in 1989 and in total 62 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 52 (84%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $11,115 for Concarneau sold by International Art Centre in October 2006. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2020. Works by Richard Wallwork are held by the Christchurch Art Gallery, Auckland Art Gallery and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
