Born in England in 1830, Thomas Wright studied under the landscape painter Thomas Creswick before his arrival in Melbourne in 1852 to join the gold rush. He painted landscapes and portraits and taught art at several public schools, visiting New Zealand briefly in 1861. He was a founding member of the Victorian Academy of Art in 1870, where he exhibited his Australian, New Zealand and English landscapes, and some portraits until his death in 1881.
