Amateur watercolourist, sketcher, sailor and station manager, Philip Gidley King, Junior was born at Parramatta, New South Wales in 1817. His father was a politician, surveyor and head of the wealthy Australian Agricultural Company, while his grandfather (also named Philip Gidley King) was the first Governor of NSW. He returned to England with his father as a young boy and after sailing with him to South America, joined the Charles Darwin on the H.M.S. Beagle, disembarking after 4 years on the ship back in Sydney in 1836. He worked on the land and in 1852 became manager of the Peel River Land and Mineral Company near Tamworth. King was elected as the first Tamworth mayor in 1876 and went on to serve five consecutive terms. In 1881 he was appointed member of the Legislative Council of the New South Wales Parliament, where he served until his death in Sydney in 1904. His work included drawings made by King while the Beagle was in the Galapagos Islands, an ink and wash drawing Williamstown from Hobson's Bay (ML), a portrait of Captain FitzRoy of the Beagle, watercolours painted on the Beagle voyage including a drawing of a butterfly and studies of fish.
