Born in Tasmania in 1911, Gilliland studied at the East Sydney Technical College. After several years working as a draftsman he studied drawing and became a skillful watercolourist. Gilliland was influential in the establishment of art classes at the Canberra Technical School, and taught there for several years. In 1953 he went to Europe for twelve months. Since his return he has held exhibitions in Australia, America, England and Brazil.

The total number of works by Hector Gilliland offered for sale by auction since 1976 is 49, of which 38 (78%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $7,800 for Sketch - Backyard Lemon sold by Sotheby's in May 2004. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Hector Gilliland are held by the Art Gallery of NSW, National Gallery of Australia and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
