Born in England in 1941, Riduan Tompkins studied at the Poole School of Art, the West England College of Art, Wimbleton School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London in the 1960s and exhibited at the Whitechapel and Waddington Galleries in London. Prior to his arrival in New Zealand in 1986 he taught and exhibited in England, Canada and the USA. A painter in the figurative and abstract styles, and a teacher, he was senior lecturer at the University of Canterbury until 1996.
