Born in London in 1819, Edward Gifford trained as an architect, and studied art at the Royal Academy School, winning a gold medal in his final year. A number of his works were hung in a the Royal Academy Exhibitions from 1842 to 1870. He arrived in New Zealand in 1877 and lived first in Oamaru, the later in Auckland and Napier, before returning to Oamaru where he lived the rest of his life. A painter of genre, portrait studies and landscapes, using oils and watercolours, Gifford exhibited widely in New Zealand. His work is represented in major New Zealand galleries.

The total number of works by Edward Gifford offered for sale by auction since 1988 is 24, of which 18 (75%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $14,960 for The Homestead, Otekaieke Near Kurow, North Otago sold by Webb's in August 1993. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Edward Gifford are held by the Auckland Art Gallery.
