Active in New Zealand towards the end of the ninteenth century, little is known about Joseph Gaut. In 1883 he advertised as an art teacher in Auckland. A painter of Maori portraits and landscapes in oil and watercolour, he exhibited with the Auckland Society of Arts in 1884 and 1885. By 1887 he was in Masterton advertising art classes and held an exhibition at his Masteron studios. exhibiting South Island subjects in Dunedin. One of his Maori portraits was shown at the 1889 Melbourne Exhibition and awarded a Fourth Order of Merit, and this large portrait is now in the collection of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, as are several other of his works.
We have records of art auction sales by Joseph Gaut from 1974 and in total 45 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 16 (36%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $16,886 for Maori Chief and Chieftainess sold by International Art Centre in July 2008. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2022. Works by Joseph Gaut are held by the Museum Of New Zealand.
