Born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1894, Colin Lovell-Smith studied at Canterbury School of Art in c1908 and in England, and then worked as a commercial artist in his father's printing business. After service during both World War I and World War II he initially taught commercial art and then later life drawing and anatomy at secondary level at St Andrews College in Christchurch and then at the Canterbury School of Art, becoming Director in 1947. He died in 1960.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $23,019 for Canterbury Garden sold by International Art Centre in March 2023.
