Born in the United Kingdom in 1916, Kathleen Shillam (nee O'Neill) arrived in Australia in 1927. Married to the artist, Leonard Shillam, she worked for a time as an advertising artist in Brisbane. A sculptor, known for her work in bronze, she studied in Florence, Italy and at the Royal College of Art in London. Shillam received several commissions, including one for portrait plaques for Queensland University, the fountain for St Paul's College, Sydney University and, with her husband, the Queensland Parliament's Coat of Arms. She exhibited from 1949 and won several awards, including the the Order of Australia in 1986 for services to the arts.
