In 1870 he helped to form the Victorian Academy of Art and became a trustee of the National Gallery of Victoria. In 1871 he settled in Sydney where he formed the New South Wales Academy of Art and, in 1874, became one of the original trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Principally a black and white artist, he was one of Australia's first etchers.
