Born in Melbourne in 1944, Maxwell Wilks studied at the National Gallery Art School, Melbourne. He is a realist painter in oils of landscapes, building and still life and first exhibited in Melbourne in 1967. He has participated in The Seven Painters Group exhibitions in Melbourne from 1973 and in Adelaide in 1976 and 1977. He was a Council Member of the Victorian Artists Society from 1976 and won the Artist of the Year award by the Victorian Artists Society, and the A. M. E. Bale Award, both in 1982.
