Born in New Zealand in 1907, Cook studied at Canterbury University, New Zealand. He was primarily a landscape artist, working in watercolour, oil and acrylics. He moved to Sydney in 1934 and taught commercial illustration at the East Sydney Technical College from 1940. He was a member of the Australian Watercolour Institute.
We have records of art auction sales by Alfred Cook from 1973 and in total 96 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 71 (74%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $13,200 for Portrait of Albert Namatjira sold by Bonhams in June 2010. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Alfred Cook are held by the Christchurch Art Gallery, Art Gallery of NSW and a further six major public national galleries (see list below).
