Born at Narrabi in New South Wales in 1923, Tom Thompson studied at East Sydney Technical College from 1947 to 1950 and overseas. On his return to Australia he taught at the South Australian School of Art in Adelaide from 1952 to 1955 and at the National Art School, Sydney from 1995 for over 20 years. Known for his major murals he was vice president of the New South Wales Society of Artists and artist in residence at the University of Newcastle.

The earliest auction listing we have for Tom Thompson is in 1979 and in total 43 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 32 (74%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $11,500 for Annunciation, Distant Town sold by Lawsons in July 1992. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2022.
