Born in Dresden in 1930, Wolfgang Grasse (also spelt Graesse) is a cartoonist and painter. He studied in Germany and Italy. In Germany in 1948 he was given a 25-year sentence for anti-Soviet propoganda cartoons, but was released in 1956 by amnesty. He worked as an illustrator and cartoonist for several West German newspapers and magazines until 1966 when he travelled to Australia. Here he published several children's books and worked as a freelance illustrator for 'The Bulletin'. Grasse also made a film and exhibited in Sydney.

The total number of works by Wolfgang Grasse offered for sale by auction since 1975 is 73, of which 46 (63%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $7,800 for 'Annunciation' 1979 sold by Davidson Auctions in November 2019. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2022. Works by Wolfgang Grasse are held by the National Gallery of Australia.
