Born in England in 1836, Alfred Sharpe trained as an architect, and is believed to have arrived in Auckland in 1859. According to a letter written by Sharpe, he spent his first twelve years farming in the north. He began exhibiting in Auckland from 1871. In 1885 he was awarded a silver medal for landscapes. Sharpe moved to Newcastle, Australia in 1889 where he apparently stayed until his death in 1908.
