Born in England in 1890, Meere studied in Britain at London’s Royal College of Art and in France before moving permanently to Australia in 1933. He worked for some time as a commercial artist and later as a teacher at East Sydney Technical College and as an illustrator for the 'Sydney Morning Herald'. By the time he won the Sulman Prize in 1938 he was well established as an artist.
