Born in Lithuania in 1922 to well known sculptor Jouzas Zikaras, Joe Zikaras studied in Lithuania and taught drawing and sculpture in Germany before arriving in Australia in 1949. He was appointed lecturer in sculpture at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 1956. He exhibited mostly in Melbourne and received several commissions for his work.
We have records of art auction sales by Joe Zikaras from 1992 and in total 14 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 12 (86%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $11,750 for (Untitled) sold by Deutscher~Menzies in November 2002. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2022. Works by Joe Zikaras are held by the National Gallery of Australia, Ian Potter Museum of Art and a further three major public national galleries (see list below).
