Isabel McWhannel was born on her father's Queensland property Rodney Downs in 1883. In 1888 the family moved to Sydney, and after completing schooling she studied under Julian Ashton and was influenced by Sid Long's decorative romanticism. John Young in an article in The Artist (Vol. l No. 1, 1941) stated that 'in some of her later work we see a robust drive to realise the greater natural facts of landscape in a manner suggestive of some of the English Moderns (John, Duncan Grant, Henry Lamb). ' She died aged 33 and unfortunately, she was not prolific and few of her works survive.

The earliest auction listing we have for Isabel McWhannell is in 1971 and in total 20 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 17 (85%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $7,475 for Summer Pastoral sold by Elder Fine Art in September 2011. This year one work has been offered for sale.
