Gwen Ockenden (Florence Gwendoline Ockenden) was born Wellington NZ on 10 June 1911. She studied art at the Ilam School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury in Wellington under Christopher Perkins whose influence is reflected in her work. She later continued her studies in Christchurch.She was married Robert Noel ( Bob ) Grono and a few of her later paintings have been signed in her married name. Most of her life was spent in the Gisborne. She was not a prolific artist, her output is estimated at 50 to 100 works as she was a reputed restorer and devoted a huge amount of time to restorations. She painted mainly landscape and floral until 1996 and died in Wellington on 15 Jan 2003.
